Healthcare organizations are rich in data about care quality and outcomes, but lack generalisable strategies for putting their data to work to improve performance. Giving clinical feedback to healthcare professionals is a widely used performance improvement strategy, but evidence about its use shows a pattern of mixed effects over decades of trials. Psychological theory is underutilized in the design of clinical performance feedback, yet it offers robust explanatory mechanisms to improve the cognitive processing and impact of feedback messages. A knowledge-based message tailoring system could reason with theoretical knowledge and clinical performance data to predict optimal feedback message formats and content, while offering explanations of the message design rationale. Our research goal is to develop and evaluate a knowledge-based message tailoring system for clinical performance feedback.
In this seminar talk, we will
- Introduce the ongoing project, carried out in the health domain of antimicrobial stewardship
- Share preliminary results, including a taxonomy of performance summary displays for use within a feedback intervention ontology and a set of formalised theoretical mechanisms for tailoring displays to improve the cognitive processing of performance summaries.
Zach is Assistant Professor of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor. Currently he is working on developing a knowledge-based system to support automated tailoring of clinical performance feedback for healthcare professionals and teams. He leads the DISPLAY lab (Design, Implementation, Systems, Performance, Learning, and Y they matter) and teaches a course on knowledge representation and knowledge management in health to graduate students. He received a PhD in Biomedical Informatics and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dahee is a MSC student in Health Informatics at the University of Michigan. She is developing a taxonomy of performance summary displays for a feedback intervention ontology, and designing reports for healthcare professionals and teams. Prior to studying at the University of Michigan, she practiced as a nurse over 5 years in South Korea.
