Forces are not just for Star Wars. Invisible (and visible) forces are what science measures to achieve ground-breaking discoveries. From common background radiation to the more minuscule particle interactions, come along for the ride as aim to make these forces “visible” for you to understand.

The Force Awakens (the Universe)

Mr Luke Hart (PhD student)
 @LukeHartMusic
The Universe is full of invisible forces. Some we are well acquainted with (if you fall out of a tree for example), some are not. One of them forces galaxies and groups of galaxies away from each other, one of them protects you from being destroyed by radiation from far away galaxies whilst also leaving fuzzy signals between channels on your television! Join as we reveal these hidden forces and wonders of physics and hopefully make some sense of it all!

Particle Interactions

Dr Darren Price (Senior Research Fellow)
ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) is a particle accelerator at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland. The experiment is designed to take advantage of the unprecedented energy available at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and observe phenomena that involve highly massive particles which were not observable. Join for a discussion and description of how research within this area and how this affected what we know today.

Gravitational Waves

Dr Evan Keane (Astrophysicist, Jodrell Bank)
 @evanocathain
Evan obtained his undergraduate degree in Galway and his Masters at DAMTP in Cambridge. He went on to do his PhD at Jodrell Bank (Thesis: “The Transient Radio Sky”) then moved to Bonn to work as a postdoctoral researcher. This was followed by a CAASTRO Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne where he was the CAASTRO Dynamic Theme Scientist. He is currently working in the role of Project Scientist for the SKA Organisation. On the “invisible forces” night, Evan will enlighten us with his talk about gravitational waves.
