Following the success of this year’s Informatics for Health conference held in Manchester back in April, we invite you to take a look at some highlights from a fantastic three days.
Organised by the European Federation for Medical Informatics and The Farr Institute of Health Informatics Research, the conference provided an opportunity for academics and industry personnel working in the area of health informatics to come together and share learning with the overall aim of improving health research.
There was a strong sense of community throughout the conference with delegates travelling from across the world. Prof Jim Weatherall (Astra Zeneca) noted that;
‘These international conferences are an important venue for bringing people together because health informatics is a global game’.
The conference welcomed more than 800 delegates over three days to interact with a packed agenda full of presentations, posters, workshops, keynotes and a vibrant social programme. The conference’s Gala Dinner was held at Manchester Cathedral, a Grade I listed medieval structure dating from 1421 with musical entertainment from The New York Brass Band.
Holding the event in Manchester was of immense pride for Chair of the Local Organising Committee Prof. Niels Peek who saw it as a great opportunity to bring together EFMI with the UK Farr Institute’s annual conference. Speaking on the first day, Prof Peek stated that;
‘This is really a global community, there are no borders for this community, and we all work together’.
A highlight of the conference was the Science Slam when six data scientists took to the stage to deliver their research in an amusing or unusual way. The audience were treated to a variety show of poetry, comedy, acting and visual arts. To take a look at all the Science Slam entries please click here.
The conference received positive feedback with the Twitter #IforH2017 trending during all three days. We look forward to the global Infomatics community being brought together once again for MIE 2018 held in Gothenburg.
